CONFERENCE PROGRAM

 July 23, 2009
8:30 AMPhotoSession 101: Smoke Inhalation and Cyanide Poisoning
Richard Alcorta, MD, FACEP

BLS Track
Smoke inhalation is an important but often overlooked cause of cyanide poisoning. A substantial body of evidence shows that cyanide can be at least as important as carbon monoxide as a toxic threat in fire smoke. Evidence also points to a lethal synergy between carbon monoxide and cyanide poisoning, even at independently sublethal doses. In this session, Dr. Alcorta discusses Maryland?s optional supplemental EMS protocol for management of patients who manifest significant signs and symptoms of acute cyanide poisoning.

8:30 AMPhotoSession 102: The Difficult Airway
Jim Radcliffe, BS, NREMT-P

ALS Track
Ninety-five per cent of airway management is terribly simple and the other 5% is simply terrible, says Jim. In this session, he explains how to recognize the potentially difficult airway, what steps to take to minimize risk, and the importance of using sound judgment in executing the airway decision algorithm.

12:00 PMPhotoSession 301: Stroke Protocols and Specialty Center Designation
Richard Alcorta, MD, FACEP

BLS Track
Over the last decade, the EMS and emergency department paradigm for management of strokes has gone from a supportive palliative care approach to one of rapid identification, potential emergency intervention and an aggressive rehabilitative approach. Maryland has had an EMS ?neurological emergencies? stroke protocol for more than 3 years, but only recently have primary stroke centers been designated to receive EMS patients who are being transported past local EDs. In this timely session, Dr. Alcorta looks at these significant changes in stroke care.

12:00 PMPhotoSession 302: EMS Response to the Pregnant Patient
Gary Wiemokly, MPH, EMT-P, RN

ALS Track
This lively session will review the physiological and anatomical changes that occur during pregnancy and how they might affect patient assessment and treatment. Using case presentations that punctuate key points, Gary moves from BLS to ALS care, offering patient assessment tips that have practical application in the out-of-hospital setting. He promises this is not your usual ?birthing baby? class.

 July 24, 2009
8:30 AMPhotoSession 401: Things That Go Bump in the Night: Kinematics of Trauma
Dwight Polk, MSW, NREMT-P

BLS Track
Everyone loves a good trauma call, but do you know what really happens when mass and energy collide? This presentation looks at the mechanisms of both blunt and penetrating trauma, using case studies to show what happens to the human body when it?s hit by a car, shot or stabbed. If you?re a trauma junkie, this class is for you!

8:30 AMPhotoSession 402: Spinal Injury
Tim Duncan, RN, CCRN, CEN, CFRN, EMT-P

ALS Track
Spinal injury is one of the most serious and difficult problems in the prehospital setting. In this must-attend lecture, Tim will describe the mechanism of injury with spinal injuries, identify immobilization techniques and describe emergent care for spinal-cord injured patients.

10:15 AMPhotoSession 501: When Everything Old is New Again: Geriatric Trauma
Dwight Polk, MSW, NREMT-P

BLS Track
You might think all trauma calls are the same, but what happens when an elderly person experiences multi-system trauma? Do they compensate the same way as a 35-year-old? Die the same? How about all those medications? Attend this class for the answers to these questions and more, and learn how you can make a difference in the geriatric patient?s outcome.

10:15 AMPhotoSession 502: Trauma: Past, Present and Future Implications for Prehospital Providers
Caleb Rogovin, CRNA, MS, CCRN, CEN

ALS Track
This presentation focuses on past, current state-of-the-art and future care modalities for the traumatically injured patient, highlighting the acute resuscitation period, including the prehospital and initial operative phase, and the impact of the prehospital practitioner. Caleb will discuss the use of new technologies, fluid resuscitation algorithms, drugs and ventilation strategies, and address common and anticipated problems in acute trauma patient management from the prehospital perspective. Current research and evidence-based practice are incorporated in the presentation.

12:00 PMPhotoSession 601: Traumatic Brain Injury
Jim Radcliffe, BS, NREMT-P

BLS Track
Traumatic brain injury is a leading cause of death and disability that results in 270,000 hospital admissions and 52,000 deaths each year. In this session, Jim discusses the importance of good assessment to recognizing and managing severe TBI.

12:00 PMPhotoSession 602: Blood, Bleeding and Breakthroughs: Working with the Hemorrhaging Patient
Caleb Rogovin, CRNA, MS, CCRN, CEN

ALS Track
Whether your patient is suffering from a traumatic injury, acute surgical bleeding or a coagulopathy, treatment almost always involves administration of blood products. In this presentation, Caleb discusses blood products, blood substitutes, Factor VIIa and surgical interventions, and uses case studies to provide a framework for prehospital practitioners, highlighting future involvement during prehospital care of hemorrhaging patients.

 July 25, 2009
8:30 AMPhotoSession 701: Misuse and Abuse of OTC and Prescription Drugs
Lisa Booze, PharmD, CSPI

BLS Track
OTC and prescription drug misuse and abuse among U.S. teens and adults is an ever-present problem. Whether it?s teens trying to get high or adults trying to relieve pain, the number of unintentional overdoses and deaths has been increasing steadily. This presentation reviews trends in drug misuse and abuse, as well as clinical effects and treatment of the OTC and prescription drugs most commonly encountered in unintentional overdoses.

8:30 AMPhotoSession 702: Airway is Not the Most Important Thing…It’s the Only Thing!
Caleb Rogovin, CRNA, MS, CCRN, CEN

ALS Track
This presentation focuses on traumatic injuries involving the airway, highlighting common airway algorithms to work through management techniques and prioritization, and using a case study approach to allow attendees to work through the problem. Caleb will discuss appropriate devices and strategies for specific trauma airway situations and compare and contrast different supraglottic airways available for difficult/emergency airway management.

10:15 AMPhotoSession 801: New and Emerging Drugs of Abuse
Lisa Booze, PharmD, CSPI

BLS Track
Drugs of abuse and their patterns of use are ever-changing as users and dealers continue to search for easily accessible, more potent and sometimes legal ways to get high. In this session, Lisa will review new and emerging drugs, including synthetic and ?designer drugs,? plants, and old drugs being used in new ways, and discuss the clinical manifestations and toxicity of these substances.

10:15 AMPhotoSession 802: We Have Carnage
Tim Duncan, RN, CCRN, CEN, CFRN, EMT-P

ALS Track
In this ?not-for-the-faint-of-heart? graphic presentation, Tim presents a case study on a multiple-victim accident with prolonged extrication and significant crush injury. The lecture addresses all aspects of this horrific scene from resource needs to direct patient care.

12:00 PMPhotoSession 901: Headaches: Not Yours! Your Patient’s!
Gary Wiemokly, MPH, EMT-P, RN

BLS Track
Join Gary for an animated and informative discussion about headaches, including how to differentiate headache types by their symptoms, assessment tips and patient approach. Learn what specific questions to ask your patient, pathophysiological factors involved in headache, and how to make your patient more comfortable in the prehospital setting.

12:00 PMPhotoSession 902: That’s Gonna Leave a Mark: Chest Trauma
Tim Duncan, RN, CCRN, CEN, CFRN, EMT-P

ALS Track
All chest trauma is a life threat until proven otherwise. In this session, Tim identifies causes of chest trauma, describes assessment findings associated with chest trauma, and describes emergency care of chest trauma victims.
